Settling tax debt for less than you owe is real - the IRS accepts tens of thousands of offers in compromise a year - and it is arithmetic before it is anything else. The move starts with the math, because the math tells you whether to make the move at all.

Run the Math First

The IRS accepts offers at or above your reasonable collection potential: equity in assets at quick-sale value - typically 80 percent of market, minus loans and the exemptions the rules grant - plus monthly disposable income under the collection standards, multiplied by 12 for offers payable within five months or 24 for longer schedules. RCP well below the balance: the offer lane is open. RCP at or above it: the lane is closed regardless of hardship stories, and a payment plan or hardship status dominates. This computation is fully checkable before filing - and checking first is the entire difference between strategy and the doomed-offer industry.

Build the Package

An accepted offer is a documented one: Form 656 plus complete financial disclosure with proof behind every number - valuations, payoff statements, expense documentation under the standards, income averaged honestly, and explanations for any assets sold or money moved while the debt was outstanding, because dissipated-asset add-backs sink more offers than poverty does. The compliance toll gates the door: all required returns filed, current-year payments running. Then months of investigation, where the prepared package answers pushback with documents already organized for it - and where rejections go to Appeals, which reverses and renegotiates them regularly.

Respect the Probation - and the Statute

Acceptance starts five years of perfect compliance; one missed return or payment resurrects the original debt. And the offer pauses the 10-year collection statute while pending - the real cost of a weak one, and the reason no offer gets filed late in the clock without deliberate analysis. I have settled six-figure debts for small fractions when the math worked, and redirected just as many cases to better lanes when it did not. The screen is one meeting, free, with a straight answer either way. Bring the numbers.
